SCCM/Windows Update

Recently I was faced with an issue where a windows 10 computer was unable to get the SUP servername from local Policy and write it to the WUServer registry key as designed.

I removed all the policies refering to Windows Updates and made sure that no registry settings were being written manually.

When looking at the “C:\windows\CCM\Logs\WUAUpdater.log” file there was the following error Group policy settings were overwritten by a higher authority (Domain Controller) to: Server and Policy.

Eventually a colleague found a technet post that identified the issue. It was tested and confirmed to be the issue.

The GPO that needed to be set to “Not Configured” was:

Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> System -> Group Policy:  “Turn off Local Group Policy Objects processing

Basically when this is enabled the local Group Policy is unable to write the WUServer and WUStatusServer registry keys which will update if the SUP is changed.
